Centre for Alternative Technology
Based in Machynlleth, Wales, this is Europe’s leading eco centre, with seven acres of hands-on displays and beautiful organic gardens.
Why you’ll love visiting us
Don’t miss out on a fantastic and inspiring day out at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), where you’ll find a wide range of information on all aspects of green living, with practical examples and useful tips woven throughout.
As you stroll around the grounds you’ll discover many working examples of renewable energy systems, organic gardens and sustainable buildings. The ‘Whole Home’ demonstrates simple ways to make a household more sustainable; for instance, by installing insulation, managing waste, buying local organic food, saving water and switching to a green energy tariff. You’ll find plenty of tips and practical examples to take home with you.
Over the school holidays, we offer special guided tours, workshops and children’s activities – CAT is a great place to go for inspiration and fun.
Built in 1973 on an abandoned slate quarry, CAT was originally a community dedicated to eco-friendly principles and was used as a 'test bed' for new ideas and technologies. The Centre generated so much interest that within two years it was opened to the public as a permanent visitor centre dedicated to renewable energy and sustainable lifestyles.
