The Eden Project Dundee has officially been approved, with planning permission granted by Dundee City Council, marking a significant milestone in bringing this visionary project to life. This decision was made after an exhaustive review process, concluded at a council meeting.
The approval process involved extensive community engagement, as the Eden Project team conducted a comprehensive co-creation initiative. This included numerous events throughout Dundee, allowing local residents and stakeholders to actively contribute to the project’s development. Their valuable feedback was instrumental in refining the final plans submitted for approval.
Located on the former gas works site on East Dock Street, the ambitious scale of the Eden Project Dundee required thorough evaluation by the council. The planning application underwent meticulous scrutiny, including a pre-determination hearing at the planning committee, before receiving the green light from the full council. This decision highlights the careful consideration and alignment with the city’s vision and objectives.
With planning permission now secured, the Eden Project Dundee can advance to the next phase, turning a transformative vision into reality and promising to enrich Dundee’s cultural landscape while making a lasting impact on the community.
Blair Parkin, Chief Experience Development Officer of the Eden Project, expressed his delight:
“We are thrilled that Dundee City Council has granted planning permission for the Eden Project Dundee. This is a major milestone, representing years of hard work by the Eden Project team, our partners in Dundee, and the community who have generously engaged with us. This project is for Dundee, by Dundee, and we are incredibly proud of the collaborative effort that has brought us to this stage. While we celebrate this achievement, we recognise there is much work ahead to make Eden Project Dundee a reality. Our focus now shifts to advancing the design, securing investment, and continuing our community programmes in the city.”
Councillor John Alexander, Leader of Dundee City Council, commented:
“The Eden Project exemplifies the city’s ambitious regeneration efforts. It will create hundreds of jobs, attract substantial visitor numbers, and inject tens of millions of pounds into the local economy. Additionally, it will offer new educational opportunities and enhance community initiatives beyond the site boundary. It was heartening to see so many local residents involved in shaping the proposals approved tonight.”
